The Club conducted a general surgical and gynaecological surgical camp at Moi District Hospital – Voi from 30th November to 2nd December 2012. A total of 27 surgeries were done whereby the activity started at 12 noon on Friday and ended on Sunday 2nd at 10 am.
General surgical operations were undertaken by Lion Dr. Yusuf Palkhi, consultant general and laparoscopic surgeon who is also the medical convener of the club. Several interesting surgeries were done including hernia repairs, removal of an arrow head and breast lumpectomy.
Gynaecological operations were done by Lion Dr. Mala M. Jamal, consultant gynaecologist and obstetrician who performed major surgeries like hysterectomies and myomectomies. One of the patients benefited from a removal of a large ovarian cyst.
Surgical and gynaecological operations would not be possible without the services of an anaesthetist and these were provided by Lion Dr. Madhu Patel during the whole camp.
Mombasa Bahari has been doing the above type of activities in the coast province in different district hospitals with an aim to help the read needy patients who cannot afford these types of specialist care. Over the last 15 years they have done nearly 800 operations of these types and helped in reducing the backlog of such patients at district hospitals.
The medical team which made this camp successful included Lion Dr. Imtiaz Ganiwalla (pharmacist), Lion Zainul Dar (overall organizer) and theatre staff from Pandya and Mombasa Hospitals. We also had lots of moral support from Lion Tasneem Dar, Lion Muzaffer Essaji and Lion Sunita Patel who attended the activity.
Club president, Lion Akil Haji takes this opportunity to thank all the members of the medical committee for this successful activity and all the nurses, theatre staff, interns and the hospital superintendent (Dr. Hafsa Jin) at Moi District Hospital – Voi for the assistance given to the club. He, at the same time would like to give a special thanks to Miss. Bhanuben Vaghela (sister of Rtn. Dr. Satish Vaghela) who was the major sponsorer of this activity.
