MALINDI MEDICAL CAMP 2016 REPORT
Lions Club of Mombasa Bahari carried out a very successful MEGA OPERATIVE Plastic and Reconstructive, General Surgery and Dermatology Medical Camp at Tawfiq Hospital, Malindi from the 16th to 19th March 2016.
Prior screening of the patients was done on 16th March and after routine pre-operative review, the surgical procedures began on 17th March.
Dr. Anil Tibrewala, a very renowned and highly regarded Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeon from Mumbai, India has been providing his service to our Club for the past 20 years. Despite his very busy schedule, Dr. Tibrewala has lent his expertise to the people of the Coast. This year, he carried out thirty six major procedures. These included repair of Cleft Lip and Cleft Palate, release of Burns Contractures and Skin Grafting.
Thirty one major General Surgical operations were carried out by Dr. Hussein Moosajee, Dr. Yusuf Palkhi and Dr. Abdalla Kassim. Amongst the surgeries carried out, there were some very large Inguinal Hernias and Hydroceles.
During all these procedures, Lion Dr. Madhu Patel, Consultant Anaesthesiologist who is also the Medical Committee Convener of the Club, took charge of providing the necessary Anaesthesia and ensuring that the patients were well taken care of during and after surgery.
The onus of ensuring that all drug and fluid requirements for the patients was on Lion Dr. Subhash Shah. The Club is also very grateful to Dr. Imtiaz Ganiwalla who ordered and sorted all the necessary drugs and medical supplies, packed and transported them to Malindi.
It would have been extremely difficult to carry out the surgeries without dedicated Surgical and Anaesthetic technicians and therefore the Medical Committee would like to appreciate the staff of Mombasa Hospital for their excellent work during the camp.
Dr. Ajay Patel, screened and treated all Dermatology related patients. A total of twenty two patients were seen by him.
As always, the job of Coordinator-in-chief was in the good hands of Lion Zainul Dar, who, in conjunction with Club President Lion Mayuri Patel, Lions Sunita Patel, Tasneem Dar and Mustafa Dar made sure that everything pertaining to the camp was in place and that there were no shortcomings. Their team also ensured that the Doctors and Theatre Staff received enough nutrients so as to keep them going during the marathon surgical procedures.
The Lions Club of Mombasa Bahari is very grateful to TAWFIQ HOSPITAL and its Administrator, Mr. Ahmed Aboud, for their generosity and support throughout the camp. The staff of Tawfiq Hospital did a commendable job in ensuring that all was well right throughout the camp. Their hard work and dedication is highly appreciated by the Club.
Camps of such magnitude cannot be carried out with generous support from members of our society. The Club is highly indebted to FREIGHT FORWARDERS KENYA LTD for their very generous sponsorship towards this camp. As in the past, they have been our ardent supporters and the Lions Club of Mombasa Bahari highly appreciates their support for the needy and less fortunate members of our society.
We also had lots of moral support from Lions Akil and Maria Haji, Lions Shoeb and Amena Ganiwalla, Lion Mwami Se-Mayama, Lion Mary Mwami, Lions Muzaffer and Huseina Essajee, Lion Kamaljeet Kaur, Lion Linda Shuma, Lion Rashida Pirbhai, Lion Tasneem Pirbhai and Lion Adnaan and spouse Alefiyah Kitabwalla who attended the camp.
During the camp raw food materials worth Kshs. 95,000/- were donated to the hospital to supply meals to all patients admitted at that time.
