Samburu Water Pans

The Lions Club of Mombasa Bahari has embarked on constructing three natural WATER PANS in the Samburu area. This project has been fully donated and funded by Mr. Ishrat Ali Jaffery in memory of his late parents.

The pans are constructed near rivers so when it rains, all three pans will fill up with water when the river overflows. The people in those areas will use this water for their daily needs and will last them until the next rain falls.

Water Paan

  1. The yearly rain falls and floods the river
  2. This flooded river spills its river banks
  3. The overflow water pours out from the river
  4. And flows into the water pan naturally
  5. The clay soil seals up the water pan preventing water from sipping through underneath
  6. Water available to people and animals in the area surrounding the water pan

The pans are named Ndovu, Nyati and Kifaru meaning Elephant, Bufalo and Rhino respectively.

Our Convenor of Water Pan Project, Lion Zainul Dar visited the sites with the contractor Mr. Hirani on Saturday 7th September 2013 and saw the progress of the work, he reported two pans were already done.
