Malindi Medical Camp 2018

MEGA PLASTIC & RECONSTRUCTIVE, CATARACT AND GENERAL SURGERY CAMP.

Lions Club of Mombasa Bahari carried out a MEGA OPERATIVE Plastic and Reconstructive, Cataract and General Surgery Medical Camp at Tawfiq Hospital, Malindi in Kilifi County from the 15th to 18th March 2018.

Prior screening of the patients was done on 15th March and after routine pre-operative review, the surgical procedures began.

Dr. Anil Tibrewala, a very renowned and highly regarded Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeon from Mumbai, India has been providing his service to our Club for the past 22 years. Despite his very busy schedule, Dr. Tibrewala has lent his expertise to the people of the Coast. This year, he carried out thirty major procedures. These included repair of Cleft Lip and Cleft Palate, release of Burns Contractures and Skin Grafting.

Twenty five major General Surgical operations were carried out by Dr. Hussein Moosajee, Dr. Yusuf Palkhi and Dr. Abdalla Kassim. Amongst the surgeries carried out were some very large Inguinal Hernias, Hydroceles and a case of Diabetic gangrene.

During all these procedures, Lion Dr. Madhu Patel, Consultant Anaesthesiologist, took charge of providing the necessary Anaesthesia and ensuring that the patients were well taken care of during and after surgery.

Dr.Hatim Yusufali Ophthalmologist and specialised in vitreo retinal diseases and surgery from Loresho Eye Hospital, Nairobi, screened and treated all patients with eye problems with necessary medications and carried out twenty two cataract surgeries.

The onus of ensuring that all drug and fluid requirements for the patients was on Lion Dr. Subhash Shah. The Club is also very grateful to Dr. Imtiaz Ganiwalla who ordered and sorted all the necessary drugs and medical supplies and also for assisting us during the camp.

It would have been extremely difficult to carry out the surgeries without dedicated Surgical and Anaesthetic technicians and therefore the Medical Committee would like to appreciate the staff of Mombasa and Pandya Hospital for their excellent work during the camp.

As always, the job of Coordinator-in-chief was in the good hands of Lion Zainul Dar, who made sure that everything pertaining to the camp was in place and that there were no shortcomings.

He also ensured that the Doctors and Theatre Staff received enough nutrients so as to keep them going during the marathon surgical procedures.

The Lions Club of Mombasa Bahari is very grateful to TAWFIQ HOSPITAL and its Administrator, Mr. Ahmed Aboud, for their generosity and support throughout the camp. The staff of Tawfiq Hospital did a commendable job in ensuring that all was well right throughout the camp. Their hard work and dedication was highly appreciated by the Club.

The Club is highly indebted to our Donors for their generous sponsorship towards this camp. As in the past, they have been our ardent supporters and the Lions Club of Mombasa Bahari highly appreciates their support for the needy and less fortunate members of our society.

Camps of such magnitude cannot be carried out without generous support from members of our society.

The Medical Convenor, Lion Shoeb Ganiwalla in his closing remarks thanked all the Doctors, Staff, Managements and staff of Tawfiq Hospital and all Lion members, Spouses and Cubs who were present during the camp for their assistance.

He said that the icing of the camp was of the two children, one who was blind because of Cataracts in both eyes and the other with a Cleft lip & Palate. Both were operated on and it was a great feeling to see the child who’s eyesight was fully restored and the one with the repaired Cleft lip & Palate happily drinking milk.

He further said, May Allah bless all those who took part in this specialised camp.

Club President, Lion Mwami Se-Mayama thanked everyone once again and officially closed the camp.
