Pwani School for the Mentally Challenged

Lions Club of Mombasa Bahari, led by their Service Activities Convener, Lion Kamaljeet Kaur, held their September Service Activity on Sunday 25th September 2016, at Pwani School for the Mentally Challenged in Mombasa.

On arrival the Lions were given a warm welcome by the children who were all excited to have visitors. They danced, sang out their hearts and engaged the Lions to dance with them.

Members were then introduced by the Convener, Lion Kamaljeet. The President, Lion Linda, appreciated the teachers for taking care and educating the children and gave assurance that the club would continue to assist them in whatever way they can.

The school moved to its present location of 10 acres coral ground in 1999. It is a mixed day and boarding school for girls and boys from 3 to 18 years of age. The school caters for 100 children, out of which 70 are boarders this year. The children come from as far as Kwale, Taita, Garsen and Tana River.

The school has many challenges as most children come from disadvantaged families and are therefore unable to pay school fees. They depend on well wishers and “where there was a need the Lions Club of Mombasa Bahari were there”. They donated foodstuff consisting of maize meal, wheat flour, sugar, rice, cooking oil, vegetables & fruits which the school had requested for. Total cost of the donation was Ksh15,000/-. .

It was a very satisfying visit as we toured their amenities and saw that “joy can only be real if people look upon their life as a service & have a definite object in life outside themselves & their personal happiness”.
